About Us!

Sawyer Creek Appaloosas is located in Northern New York at the foothills of the spectacular Adirondack Mountains.  Our horses enjoy 234 acres of meadows, woods, rock outcrops and streams. We feel this natural environment creates a social, versatile and vigorous animal.  Our select herd contains predominately nationally halter pointed and titled stock which includes World and National Champions. While most of our horses are highly colored, our primary emphasis is on quality conformation. Our mares are crossed on our own select stallions as well as some of the highest quality and most competitive ApHC and AQHA stallions in the country. As a result, we have successfully and consistently produced national and world titled horses in a variety of disciplines. We utilize both modern and foundation bloodlines  with only HYPP N/N stock accepted into our program.  While most of our horses have quite extensive show records and the majority of our offspring are sold to show homes, we are not a show barn. Our focus is on breeding to better the Appaloosa breed for future generations. The majority of the photographs you will see are taken by our daughter and are of the horses in their natural environment in pasture condition.

Sawyer Creek's long association with the breed began in the 1950's when John's father Rex Kreider began breeding and showing Appaloosas. Rex owned the famous stallions Mane's Blue Eagle, Zebra Dunn and Revel Jr.. Trips with him to buy horses in northern Idaho and showing at the early Nationals are memories which instilled a deep love for the Appaloosa which continues today. Our goal at Sawyer Creek, as it was then, is to breed a competitive, athletic and good natured Appaloosa with a vivid coat pattern and to offer the public top quality stock at prices family's can afford.

With its distinctive spotted rump “blanket” patch, the Appaloosa is among the most recognizable of horses. This celebration of the breed includes chapters on its history, close bond with humans, and uses in ranching and such competitive events as horse shows, rodeos, and endurance races.
